Here's the uncomfortable truth about AI tools: the median user gets mediocre results not because the AI is weak, but because the instructions are. The same model that writes a forgettable paragraph for one person writes a launch-ready landing page for another. The difference is the prompt.
The 3-part formula
Every high-performing prompt we've tested follows the same skeleton:
1. Role. "Act as a direct-response copywriter" produces measurably different output than no role at all. The role sets the knowledge domain and the standards the AI applies to its own work.
2. Context. This is where 90% of prompts fail. The AI knows nothing about your product, customer, price point, or constraints unless you say so. Two sentences of real context outperform a paragraph of instructions.
3. Output format. Demand a specific deliverable: "20 headlines, grouped by angle, with your top 3 marked." Without this you get an essay; with it you get something you can use.
Before and after
Before: "Write a marketing email for my product."
After: "Act as an email copywriter. My product is [PRODUCT] at [PRICE] for [AUDIENCE]. Write a promotional email for [OFFER] ending [DEADLINE]: pattern-interrupt opening line, the offer in one sentence, 3 bullet benefits, deadline restated with what they lose by waiting, and a P.S. with the strongest single reason to act. Under 250 words."
The first prompt gets you a template. The second gets you a draft you could send today.
The second-pass secret
Never accept the first draft. The highest-ROI follow-up in any AI conversation is: "Make it 30% shorter and twice as specific." Other high-leverage second passes: "Give me 3 variations with different emotional angles," "Critique this like a skeptical customer, then fix what you found," and "Rewrite this in the voice of this sample: [PASTE YOUR WRITING]."
